Major General Brian Winski visits the Museum & Library to discuss the 101st Airborne Division and the role of the U.S. Army.

Major General Winski is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He commissioned through ROTC and entered active duty as an Infantry Officer in 1989. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and a Master’s degree from Louisiana State University. His military education includes the United States Army Command and General Staff College, the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, and an Army War College fellowship with the Washington Institute of Near East Policy.

Major General Winski proudly served in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) for over 12 years. His most recent assignment was the Chief, Legislative Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Army. His other assignments include service in the 82nd Airborne Division, the 3rd Infantry Division, the 1st Cavalry Division, the Joint Readiness Training Center, and the Army Legislative Liaison office.

He has served in various command and staff positions over multiple combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan throughout his career. He was a Rifle Platoon Leader in B/2-327 Infantry during Desert Shield/Storm, 1-327 Infantry Battalion XO during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Chief of Operations for the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq in 2004, the 1-61 Cavalry Squadron Commander in Iraq 2005-2006, Division G3 for the 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan 2008-2009, and Brigade Combat Team Commander in the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq 2010-2011.

Major General Winski’s military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (2OLC), Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Bronze Star Medal (4OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (Silver OLC), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3OLC), Combat Infantryman Badge (with Star), Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab, and Army Staff Identification Badge.
